The Research Department of Microbiology offers courses in B.Sc., Microbiology from 1996 and M.Sc., Applied Microbiology from 2001, M.Phil., Microbiology from 2015 and Ph.D. Microbiology from 2019. This department has a history of conducting trend-setting research that is best exemplified by the pioneering contributions to the biology of actinomycetes. The trust area of research conducted in the department includes biofertilizer production, bioremediation and degradation of xenobiotic compounds, microbial secondary metabolites, nanoparticle synthesis, enzyme studies, algal technology etc.
The department runs a forum- “Vigyan Predipa” -Association of Microbiologist. The forum actively concentrates on popularization of science among the students. The Journal Club and Bhamathi Microbiology News Letter are the integral components of Vigyan Pradipa. The Journal club conducts monthly meetings regularly in which students of the department present various research papers from reputed Journals. Bhamathi Newsletter is published biannually. The news letter consists of various research articles published by research scholars, scientists and students from the institutions all over the state.
The department is endeavoring in promoting the knowledge of the students by industrial visits, seminar and conference participation, paper presentations, summer internships etc. Many of our students and research fellows have become leading investigators in institutions of eminence within India and abroad. The faculties have been successful in mobilizing highly competitive research grants from national agencies such as DST, TNSCST and several international agencies as well as industries. The department offers various certificate courses and value-added courses in order to enrich the knowledge of the students.
